The front gear is called the chainring, or crank, or “front gear”. In fact, the entire assembly of the crank arm and front cog together is called a “crankset”, or sometimes a “chain set”. The rear gear is called the sprocket, or cog. The chain connecting the front and rear gears together is, naturally, called the “chain”.
The chainrings are the toothed wheels that the chain runs around. There are usually two chainrings, although some bikes have three. The chainrings are attached to the crank arms. The size of the chainrings is measured in teeth. A small chain ring will have fewer teeth than a large chain ring.
